4 Reasons to buy local, seasonal fruit and vegetables
Eating good and nutritious food is incredibly important for development and health. There are many reasons why buying local is the way but here are perhaps the top 4.
#1 - Fresher Produce
Buying local means that from the moment the produce is harvested it gets to your plate quicker than the food from a supermarket. Supermarkets have to source and transport products further, often from abroad. As it is fresher, the produce can last longer in your fridge or pantry.
#2 - Better for the Environment
One in five lorries on motorways are carrying food, a lot of which has travelled huge distances. To transport produce and keep it fresh it is kept in unnatural environments. Reducing the amount of miles and refrigeration food requires helps reduce your carbon footprint and the climate.
#3 - Supports the local Economy
Putting money into local shops, farms and businesses helps invest in your community, keeping money in the local economy. These businesses can then provide jobs and services for more people. A thriving community provides more opportunities, employment, education, social activities, and quality of life.
#4 - Better Quality
The Quality is better due to not having been grown and maintained in an unnatural environment to produce out of season produce. With better quality food comes much higher nutrition and health benefits. A lot of local and seasonal fruit and veg is organically grown and many hours of effort and work has gone into the production.
